Tashina, I'm not sure I follow you correctly. Backing up your server may or may not be enough. In my opinion, it is not enough, because it is possible that all data might not be saved, or that your restored backup from a full server backup may have some corruption. It depends on a whole bunch of factors (including timing and chance).

I feel that it is important that you use the QBB backup feature in addition to the server backup, at least periodically.

IN ADDITIONA - note that if you do a backup WITH full verification, the database manager is doing some cleanup work. This cleanup work is NOT being done if you are just doing full server backups. So even if you don't lose data, you may be building up corruption issues and slowing the system down as the TLG file grows.

Just to be clear... (I told my client this but wanted to verify my info). If you backup your server daily/weekly... whatever the case may be... and you don't ever save a backup... If your server was to crash, would you have a file to restore or would that data be lost? I'm under the impression that the data would be lost. I had a client with a similar issue and because she didn't do frequent backups, she lost data. I had to restore from my last save (the previous quarter) and reinput everything after that date.

I just wanted to better understand this issue so that I could explain it to the Executive Director. I just started here and they manage 100s of clients but never actually backup the QB files... they just backup the server.

Let me know.

Thanks,

Diana, I can't be sure because there are several options here. Is it creating a file with a file type of "QBB" somewhere in your system? If so, that is a regular QuickBooks data backup...

Can you explain to me what kind of back up my Mfg Premier 2009 QB does every time I close the program? Is it something that I can use if QB corrupt? So far I was planning my back up on the second hard drive. I have a new business, and was thinking for a last couple of days for my back up plan and how to do that. I am glad I found your info. Thank you.

Shirley, that would depend on what the error is, and what method you are using to make a backup. Sometimes you get errors doing a QB backup to a flash drive. The answer is to back up to your desktop and then copy to the flash drive. Sometimes you have bad data in the QB file that prevents a QB backup. The answer is to look at your QBWIN.LOG file to see if there are errors that can be cleaned up.

Thank You C. C. Russell for your answer. I am new to this community but must admit that I am pleased with the help.

I have lots to learn and will soon return the favor.

Thank you for addressing this issue. We back up QB on the server weekly, and have subscribed to an offsite backup service that occurs during the nighttime hours. All good, but I've wanted to do a daily on removable media for some time. My boss doesn't seem to have an urgency regarding this matter. I'll show her this article. Thanks, Donna
