QuickBooks 2010 Pricing
You can order QuickBooks 2010 starting this week, so here is my annual “QuickBooks Pricing” article. Where is the best place to buy QuickBooks? I’ll let you decide – but do NOT pay full retail for your copy of QuickBooks!
Please note that these prices are subject to change, so you should check them out before making a purchase.
Standard Pricing
If you go to the QuickBooks web site at http://quickbooks.intuit.com/ you will see the following:
- Pro 2010 one user, $199.95
- Pro 2010 three user, $549.95
- Premier 2010 one user, $399.95
- Premier 2010 three user, $1099.95
This lets you download your program immediately. For an extra $9.95 you can have a CD mailed to you. It’s easy to burn your own CD – and I highly recommend that you save your download to a CD (too many people don’t, and then find themselves in trouble if they have to reinstall later). You will get a registration code – make sure you write all of that on the CD backup copy you make.
Upgrade Pricing
If you are ordering through the Intuit web site you will see that there is an upgrade offer – click on the Upgrade tab. If you have an older copy of QuickBooks and have a license number, you can get a discount!
You will be asked for your registration number, a 15 digit code you can find in your current product under Help and then About QuickBooks. Apparently you are not limited to being able to upgrade from just the 2009 version – this should work with the 2005 through 2009 versions. If you have an older version you will have to call them directly to see if you can get the discount.
Internet Pricing
You can go to Amazon and find the following;
- Pro 2010 one user
, $149.99
- Pro 2010 three user
, $449.99
- Premier 2010 one user
, $249.99 – please double check with them that this is the correct price, I’m not sure that this is right.
- Premier 2010 three user
, $999.99
In addition to this you may be able to find copies on eBay, but I don’t recommend shopping there. You don’t always know what you are getting – if it is an opened copy that has been registered you may not be able to transfer the license to your company. It can be very risky.
If you are patient, and you want a single user Pro version, wait a few months. Intuit often provides heavy discounts on single user Pro licenses through various retailers like Office Max. I can’t say if they will do that this year or not, but I’d be surprised if they don’t. However, note that I usually don’t recommend Pro for most businesses – I greatly prefer Premier.
An Even BETTER Price
Even though QuickBooks is giving “upgrade” pricing, you can still do better. Here are a couple of options.
You can go to a discount vendor such as Sam’s Club. At the time that I’m writing this they are not listing the product in their online store – but in the past there have been slightly lower prices for the products there. Note that you might only find single user licenses.
This is usually not a download copy, it will be shipped to you, and shipping charges may apply.
Another alternative is the CCRSoftware QuickBooks Products web site. For the sake of openness and honesty, this is my web site and I do get a commission from sales if you click here. However, you get one of the best prices around, and it is a downloadable copy (so you get it faster). If you choose a product from that web site, you are taken to the Intuit web site and you order directly from Intuit. However, as you can see below, the price is discounted (the discount varies by product):
If you are looking for a multi user license, this often gives you the best price.

Great article, Charlie!!
This is a fair, and well written, representation of the options.
Another question – Is it possible to buy multiple single user copies and, when installing, have them linked under one registration number to allow multi-user access?
Laura D
Thank you, Laura.
Buying multiple single licenses is supposed to be the same as buying a single multi-user license – you wouldn’t have them under one registration number, though. This shouldn’t be an issue (note that I haven’t tried it myself, I’m just repeating what Intuit tech support says).
Great website! What is the best option for enterprise edition? Thanks.
Intuit doesn’t discount Enterprise. You won’t find it in the online stores, you won’t find a discount like I offer through my web site. You either buy it at full retail through Intuit, or you buy it from a ProAdvisor. Some ProAdvisors will provide you with a discount, but that is discouraged (they would be giving you some of their own price break).
Do you have a price or recommendation on where to purchase a 3-user premier nonprofit edition of Quickbooks 2010?
Kathy, any of the options I list above will work for the Premier Nonprofit edition. If you go to Amazon, it says “Premier Industry Editions” – that is what you want. When you install the program you are asked what industry to install, and Nonprofit is one of your choices. Or if you go to my web site, there is a NonProfit link, but in the Intuit web site it will again say “Premier Industry Editions”. Same thing applies.
Hey Charlie!! Thx for the great articles!! Why do you prefer Premier over Pro?? Would Premier take care of some of the issues I’ve had?? (well, QB issues anyway…;-) Didn’t you have an article about waiting a while before upgrading so all the bugs can be weeded out?? I thought it was you, but maybe I read it somewhere else?? Thx for all the help!!
John
John – there is a difference between buying an upgrade versus installing versus using an upgrade. Buy the upgrade whenever it makes sense for you – now if you get a good price for example. You can install it now, as long as you install it to a separate folder than your current version, so that you can play with the new version and test it (with a test company, not your “production” data). What I recommend in several of my articles is that you wait awhile before you use the upgrade to run your business. I’ve already run into some bugs with just a few minutes of testing – I don’t recommend trusting your business with this until we get to R2 or R3, most likely. Even if you don’t want to wait for that, test it before you convert your file so that you can determine what is different from before.
John, to answer your other question – for most businesses (but not all) the very first thing that comes to mind about recommending Premier over Pro is the Sales Order feature. There are so many uses for this for many businesses. In the Intuit Community Forum many times the answer to a question is that you want to use sales orders. I probably should write an article on that…
Also, per item price level lists is a very useful feature to many businesses.
Of course, I can’t say that Premier is better for every business. I would have to know more about a business to be able to make a firm recommendation. But all of my direct support clients have found that they are better off with Premier (or Enterprise for larger companies).
Thanks, Charlie, for your reply & website. Recently discovered and very helpful!
Hi Charlie:
I am thinking about updrading my Quickbooks 2003 to the 2010 Pro version. I have an older computer and want to install on that one, although plan on getting a new computer in 2010. Can I install Quickbooks on mutiple computers?
Thanks for your help.
Jaynee
Jaynee, the license allows you to install the program on two computers as long as only one is used at a time. The typical situation is a copy on your desktop and a copy on your laptop, but it should work well with what you are considering.
