Managing Service Truck Inventory in QuickBooks
QuickBooks by itself does not support multiple locations. To do this properly you need to purchase an add-on program of some sort, which often will keep the inventory in a separate file. There are some simple workarounds that can be used, though. In this article I’ll explain one way that might work if you are trying to track parts that you have assigned to a service truck or other separate location.
Goodbye to QuickBooks 2007 Support
It’s that time of year – Intuit’s annual “Sunset” of older versions of QuickBooks. If you are using QuickBooks 2007 then you won’t be able to use certain services after May 31st. I won’t editorialize on why this is done or if it is a good practice or not, I’ll just discuss what the impact will be on your business.
Frequently Asked QuickBooks Questions (and Answers!)
Just a quick note: I’ve started a companion blog that has short answers to common questions that I’m asked by people in comments in this blog as well as in the Intuit Community Forums. QuickBooks FAQ is updated on no particular schedule, just whenever I have an answer that I’m asked multiple times. Less in depth than Practical QuickBooks, but it may be of value to you. Let me know what you think!
QuickBooks Add On Programs: IIF
While QuickBooks is a very flexible software system, it probably doesn’t do everything that you need (as far as accounting and inventory control). Fortunately, you can expand the capabilities of your copy of QuickBooks by adding an “add on” or “QuickBooks compatible” program. This week I’ll talk about programs that use the IIF method of exchanging data.

Dealing with Scrap in QuickBooks Manufacturing
Many manufacturers have to deal with scrap in their manufacturing process. That is, the consumption of component materials beyond what is defined in the bill of materials due to waste, trimmings, left over sections or other variable consumptions. QuickBooks doesn’t deal with this directly. Let’s talk about some ways to handle it.
Does QuickBooks Bug You?
While QuickBooks is a widely used and popular program that has been around for quite awhile, there are a number of “issues” that cause people problems. “Bugs”, if you will. I would like to try something here. Leave a comment that briefly describes a bug that is causing you problems. Let’s see if there are some big ones that affect a lot of people, and maybe we can draw some attention to them at Intuit.
QuickBooks Shuts Down When Issuing a Build
In QuickBooks Premier and Enterprise you can create inventory assembly items, and then create a build transaction to manufacturer that assembly. There are times when QuickBooks generates an error and says it has to shut down just after you issue a build, and the build is not recorded.
Importing QuickBooks Transactions with Transaction Pro Importer
QuickBooks has a “closed” database – they control access to the data very tightly. While you have some limited ability to import list data (items, customers), it is generally difficult to import transaction data (invoices, checks). Today I’m reviewing an excellent tool that you can use to import transactions into QuickBooks (and lists as well), the Transaction Pro Importer from Baystate Consulting.
