QuickBooks 2009 R8 – Online Bank Fixes
A quick Saturday note – more on this later. Release R8 of QuickBooks 2009 has multiple fixes for the Online Banking feature – including the option to switch to the 2008 version of online banking which many people have requested.
QuickBooks 2009 Release R7
Intuit has released the R7 update to QuickBooks 2009 on March 23 - it is available via manual update. Automatic updates will probably be released later this week. This article was revised on 3/24/2009.
There are a number of changes with this release. Please note that I have not tested all of these changes at this time. I’ll point out some of the significant changes here – for a full list go to the update info page.
QuickBooks Online Banking – Interview and Updates
OK, I hope that this is my last blog posting specifically on the QuickBooks Online Banking feature for awhile. Two items today – a discussion with Greg Wright of Intuit on how they are dealing with the problems of this feature, and a preview of some of the changes coming out in the next update.
How to Deal With QuickBooks 2009 Online Banking
I’ve written several posts about the problems with the new online banking feature in QuickBooks (here, here and here), and in this article I’m going to provide you with some resources to help you if you have to deal with these problems. (Note that on 3/17/2009 I published a followup article)
QuickBooks 2009 Release R6
Just a quick note. Intuit released the R6 update of QuickBooks 2009 today, with little advance notice. There are only two fixes listed for this release:
- If your company file is located in certain locations (some network locations, the root folder of a drive) you would get an error (-6177, 0) when trying to open it. This wasn’t a common problem, and if you ran into it you should have already found that you could move the file to a different location.
- In some cases a sales order would be marked as closed when you used group items or items with different units of measure. If you ran into this problem it was a major hassle, so I’m glad to see that they fixed this. Note that if you have some sales orders showing this problem you still need to repair them – the instructions for this can be found in the Intuit web site at http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/support/pages/ContentSections/Pages/salesorder
If you have had either of these problems, OR if you work with sales orders and group items (or multiple units of measure) then you should install this update soon. If you don’t have these problems, you can wait to do the update at a convenient time. I should note that I have only used this update for a couple of days – I’ve not seen any new problems introduced, but that isn’t a guarantee. By this stage in their development cycle I don’t expect new major problems to be introduced.
Update later in the day on Feb 6 2009: I’m seeing several messages in the Intuit Community forum from people who got the update and are having problems with printing or the PDF driver. I should note that in MY installation I have NOT run into either of these problems. I have not worked with a system that shows the problems that some are reporting, so I don’t have any fixes for them at this point. If these reports are coming from people with Vista 64 bit systems – note that the PDF driver gets altered back to the standard setting when you install an update, and as I mention in my Vista 64 article, that creates problems that you have to fix.
QuickBooks 2009 Release R5 and QuickBooks Messenger
In an earlier article I talked about the new QuickBooks Messenger feature, which some people love and others hate. I provided a method that you could use to turn it off, which involved renaming or erasing a file. One problem with this approach – when you update to a new release, the Messenger feature would be restored.
Good news! In the R4 and R5 updates of QuickBooks 2009 they have added a function that lets you easily turn this feature off. When you are logged in as the Administrator in multi-user mode you will find Disable QuickBooks Messenger as an option in the File/Utilities menu.
QuickBooks 2009 and Online Banking – Some Fixes
In prior posts about the new Online Banking feature (here and here) I talked about the problems with this feature in the initial 2009 release. I’m posting some information from Intuit about some updates they are making in December, as well as a link to a video they have produced. Note that these releases apply to the Windows versions only, at this time.
QuickBooks 2009 and Online Banking – Continued
In my November 3rd posting on QuickBooks 2009 and Online Banking I talked about the problems with the new, updated Online Banking feature in QuickBooks 2009. I received a response from Rich Walker, an Accountant Communications and Media Relations employee from Intuit who wanted to pass on additional information. Note that a lot of this duplicates what was said by Intuit product manager Greg Walker in the Intuit Community discussion on this subject, but it does add more information.
QuickBooks 2009 and Online Banking
As more people implement QuickBooks 2009 there is a rising storm of protest over changes in one feature – Online Banking. The 2009 release made a significant number of changes in this feature, and many people are finding that the new functions make their reconciliation of online banking transactions with their QuickBooks records very laborious. Intuit has heard this, and there are plans to create an update that will fix the problems.
QuickBooks Messenger
One of the new features introduced in QuickBooks 2009 is the QuickBooks Messenger, a feature that helps with communication between QuickBooks users in multi-user environments.
