QuickBooks Compatible add-on programs (also referred to as “third party” programs) generally use the SDK (software development kit) provided by Intuit. This allows them to exchange information with QuickBooks in a controlled and secure fashion. With the release of QuickBooks 2010 we have seen a number of complaints from people using a variety of add-on programs, generally saying that their add-on programs stopped working.
QuickBooks and Windows 7
Back in July I wrote an article about QuickBooks on Windows 7 RC and Internet Explorer 8, where I talked about QuickBooks 2009 on the pre-release version of Windows 7. Since that time we have had the public release of Windows 7, and the release of QuickBooks 2010, so it is time that I revisited this subject.
QuickBooks on Windows 7 RC and Internet Explorer 8
Just a quick note on compatibility of QuickBooks and the latest Microsoft releases. I have the following setup:
- Microsoft Windows RC 7: This is the current “release candidate” for Windows 7, the successor to Windows Vista. It should be very close to what you see this Fall for the production copy. I’ve installed this on a Dell XPS410 32 bit Core2 system with 4 GB of RAM. I had reformatted the hard drive to do a clean installation rather than an update.
- Internet Explorer 8: This is the version of IE that installs with Windows 7. Even if you are using Vista or XP you may have this version, as Microsoft has been pushing it out through their update system.
- QuickBooks Enterprise 9.0: For this test I installed a client version of QBE 9 on the system, as this computer is not connected to a server yet. This is a US edition.
QuickBooks 2009 Release R7
Intuit has released the R7 update to QuickBooks 2009 on March 23 - it is available via manual update. Automatic updates will probably be released later this week. This article was revised on 3/24/2009.
There are a number of changes with this release. Please note that I have not tested all of these changes at this time. I’ll point out some of the significant changes here – for a full list go to the update info page.
Solving QuickBooks Problems on 64 bit Vista
If you are trying to run QuickBooks on a 64 bit version of Microsoft Vista you will most likely run into problems. In this article I’ll show you how to get around the most common problem – QuickBooks crashing when you reconcile or send forms by email. This article was updated on 3/24/2009, with significant changes from earlier revisions.
QuickBooks in a Virtual PC
Do you want to install an older version of QuickBooks on Windows Vista, but can’t get it to work? One tool that can help you is a “Virtual PC”. Today I’ll give a quick introduction to working with this kind of technology. It’s hard to cut through all the jargon – but the goal in our discussion is to allow you to run any copy of QuickBooks that is older than the 2007 release on your Vista computer. There are other applications of this approach that might be of benefit to you as well.
