QuickBooks 2021 R5 Released

It has been a few months since Intuit released an update for QuickBooks 2021. Here we go, QuickBooks 2021 R5, which is about the time when  start having some confidence in the quality of the release of a new product. Now we are getting to see what kind of bug fixes there are based on a few months of actual customer use “in the field”.

This update should be available via automatic updates. You can also go to the QuickBooks Update site to download the patch.

Note that if you are using QuickBooks Payroll it is very important that you install this update, if you are using Direct Deposit.

QuickBooks 2021 R5 User Management Changes

Intuit is really doubling down on the relation between the user and the Intuit Account, both for the company and for the user. I believe that in their mind, they want every user to have their own Intuit Account. But I’m not sure that works for many businesses. So there have been a lot of small changes in relation to this over the past year, over several different years of QuickBooks products. Sometimes I wonder, did they really think this out in detail, in advance? Here are some more changes.

  • If the QuickBooks Admin linked an Intuit Account with a QuickBooks company file before December 2019 that account will be disconnected from the company file.
  • If the QuickBooks Admin has not signed in to the Intuit Account for more than 180 days, despite getting three email reminders to do so, that account will be disconnected from the company file.
  • A bug fix, now non-Admin users of QuickBooks Enterprise with the Accounts Payable role can send a “Request for Access” to the Primary Admin to join the company file Intuit Account.
  • In the Accountant Edition of QuickBooks, when opening an existing company file, or creating a new one, the admin will be prompted to sign in to their Intuit Account
  • When accessing Manage My QuickBooks account from the Help menu, you will no longer be required to have an Intuit Account to sign in if the user has already done so elsewhere in the file.

Important QuickBooks 2021 R5 Payroll Changes

Changes in Federal compliance rules require Payroll customers using Direct Deposit to update their Payroll account information by July 31, 2021.

Other Changes

  • Intuit fixed a bug where a Processed Payment Receipt wasn’t aligned after processing a transaction.
  • A new Discovery Hub has been added via an icon on the top menu bar, to explore what QuickBooks has to offer in new features.
  • You can email selected customers a secure Payment Link to use for advance deposits, prepayments on statements, or initial consultations. I haven’t looked at this, I assume you have to be using a QuickBooks Payments service.

    Hi Charlie –

    Can you point me to more info on the payroll changes with respect to direct deposit?

    I did load the update, and it required a different sogn in, but I am not noticing any differences in the payroll module.

      Unfortunately, I am not using that feature myself, and Intuit’s notes on this are vague. The new sign in may be all. If you are using Intuit Payroll, they should be able to provide more detail. I’ve asked them about it, but haven’t gotten a response.
