QuickBooks 2021 R6 Released

| May 20, 2021

Shortly after the 2021 R5 release, Intuit has released QuickBooks 2021 R6, with an important bug fix and an interesting new feature, at least for SOME of you.

This update should be available via automatic updates. You can also go to the QuickBooks Update site to download the patch.

QuickBooks 2021 R6 Bug Fix

This release fixes a problem that prevented you from opening memorized reports that were created when you used QuickBooks 2018. I’m not sure how many people will be affected by this particular circumstance, but if you are then you need this update. You will need to perform a Rebuild Data after the update to repair the reports.

QuickBooks Bill Pay powered by Melio

Intuit is working with Melio to provide you with the ability to pay vendor bills electronically.

  • You can pay bills directly from QuickBooks desktop while choosing how your vendors receive payment.
  • You can schedule vendor bill payments in advance of the due date.
  • Bills are marked as paid automatically in QuickBooks to prevent duplicate payments.
  • Payment methods include electronic transfers, credit and debit cards.
  • Payment can be delivered as a bank deposit or by paper check, per vendor.

Sound interesting? Here are some Melio links of interest:

  • Melio home page
  • Melio’s QuickBooks page. Note that this addresses QuickBooks Online, so it isn’t clear at this time how things will work in QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Melio’s pricing page. This is always the first thing I want to know, what it is going to cost. I look here before I look at how the actual system works. This is very interesting!

I’ve not used this myself as I don’t currently have that many vendors that I pay. But from the looks of things, it is worth investigating if you issue a lot of vendor payments.

There is a catch, though. The announcement by Intuit says that this is for selected QuickBooks Plus customers. Recall that QuickBooks Plus is the subscription version of the desktop product. Not the purchased version that many people are using. See https://quickbooks.intuit.com/desktop/pro/ and note that the prices are marked, in very small print, “annual subscription”. And what about that “selected customers” part? Some can use it, some can’t?

I’m going to guess (and I don’t have any inside info about this) that features like this will only show up in the subscription version, moving forward.
