QuickBooks 2020 R14 Released

| May 5, 2022

Intuit has released QuickBooks 2020 R14 for the desktop, with only one significant change.

This update should be available via automatic updates. You can also go to the QuickBooks Update site to download the patch.

QuickBooks 2020 R14 and Microsoft Internet Explorer

QuickBooks Desktop has used a built-in version of Microsoft Internet Explorer for many functions for as long as I can remember. This has been annoying to many users who don’t really want to use an older browser that has a number of compatibility issues in some environments, but it has been something we’ve had to live with. However, Microsoft is retiring Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022. If QuickBooks continues to use that browser, they are using something that is no longer supported, no longer updated, which is a security risk.

With the release of QuickBooks 2020 R14, Intuit is dropping Internet Explorer from QuickBooks, and will rely on their own custom web browser. This browser actually has been in use for some of the functions for several years now, I believe, so it should be reasonably reliable. It also will be updated for security issues by Intuit moving forward.

This is a good move and it is a good idea to update your QuickBooks 2020 product to the R14 release. Most people will not notice any differences.

If you are using QuickBooks 2019 or older then you will continue to have Internet Explorer built in to your product, and Intuit’s only suggestion is to upgrade to a subscription of QuickBooks Desktop or QuickBooks Online. There is no “one time purchase” option for you, just a subscription version.

Is that a problem? I honestly don’t think that there is a big security risk, since you aren’t going to use the built in browser to browse the world wide web. But….
